Soprano Cornet - Kevin Moxon

Kevin started to play the Cornet at the age of 11 whilst at school in Barnsley, South Yorkshire.

Whilst continuing his education he played with the Rockingham Colliery Band, Barnsley Music Centre Band, and was also a member of the Yorkshire Schools Brass Band until leaving school.

When he was 18, Kevin joined the Sheffield based Andrews Heat For Hire Band on Soprano Cornet, moving from there to join the famous Hammonds Sauce Works Band (now the YBS Band), playing Soprano with them for three years.

During this time Kevin was tutored by Tom Paulin, and George Thompson of the Grimethorpe Colliery Band. Kevin was asked to audition for the Soprano Cornet position with the famous Black Dyke Mills Band, but due to work and personal committments at that time, declined and for a while stopped playing altogether.

In 1992, Kevin started to play again joining the Giggleswick & Settle Band, becoming one of their featured soloists.

Moving to the Whitby area, Kevin broadened his musical experience by joining both The Dalesmen Singers Choir, and in summer 2000 the Scarborough based brass ensemble 'Simply Brass'.

Kevin regularly performs solos with both bands and choir, and is also involved with orchestral and solo work throughout the Whitby and Rydale area.

This wide base of playing activities gives Kevin the opportunity to play the Soprano Cornet, Bb Cornet, Piccolo Trumpet, D/Eb Trumpet, and also the Bb Trumpet.

For the past two years Kevin has been the Soprano Cornet player for the Old Silkstone Band (winning the Brian Evans Memorial Trophy in Summer 2006, at the Brighouse Lions Contest), and the Shepherd Group Band (winning the Best Soloist prize at the Malton Brass '06 Contest, performing 'La Califfa', superbly arranged by Simply Brass Musical Director, Stephen Hague). 

Kevin took up the conductors baton in 2006 and had a twelve month spell as Musical Director of the Bilsdale Silver band, before recently taking over as MD of the Shepherd Group Concert Brass Band. Kevin is a member of the National Association of Brass Band Conductors, and is currently completing a part time conductors course studying under Ray Farr, at the University of Durham.
