John Avery

2nd Trombone

John Avery - 2nd Trombone

John started playing 3rd Cornet at the age of nine with the City of Canterbury Band. He moved onto 2nd Baritone before taking up Trombone when he moved to senior school at 11.

Apart from a short spell with the Medway Towns Band, John stayed with City of Canterbury on 2nd and 1st Trombone for 15 years. John met his wife Clare when she joined City of Canterbury.

A move to West Yorkshire took place in 1985 following a change of job and from 1985 to 1987 John played 2nd Trombone with Haworth Band.

A move to the Midlands followed and two years were spent on 2nd Trombone with Bulkington Silver Dunlop Engineering Band before a break from playing due to family commitments.

John joined Bedworth Band variously on 1st and 2nd Trombone, before being lured into the Championship Section with Coventry CPA Band.

Twelve months of Championship playing was more than enough and he returned to Bedworth on 2nd Trombone.

A move to North Yorkshire took place in the summer of 1998 and  another short break ensued whilst the family moved north before he joined Langbaurgh Brass on 1st Trombone.

With promotion to the First Section looming, John hung up his Trombone for four years before joining Marske Brass on Bass Trombone in 2006.

John has played at the National Finals on a number of occasions. He has also played trombone with Orchestras in North Yorkshire, the Midlands and Kent.

John joined Simply Brass on 2nd Trombone during 2007.
