Tony Spencer - 1st Trombone

Tony was always a keen follower of his local Brass Band (Kippax) and whilst working at the local colliery Ledston Luck he met Brian Nicholson whose family members all played in the band. At Tony's request Brian said he would ask Mr Norman Morley the then Bandmaster to teach him to play an instrument. Mr Morley went to see him and suggested that he should try a Trombone and in January 1974 Tony had his first lesson.
Tony played trombone at Kippax Band from 1974 until 1997 some 23 years. The trombone section at that time and for the next 10 years consisted of Mr Bill Rodgers on principle, Tony on 2nd and Mr keith Fairburn on Bass.
In 1997 Tony retired from the coal industry and decided to move from West Yorkshire to Scarborough. After several months of not playing, Tony received a call from Mr Fred Muscroft of the Bridlington Brass Ensemble to go along for a blow. Tony stayed with the B.B.E. for approximately 3 years.
Whilst walking through Scarborough one day Tony bumped into Mr Stephen Hague ex. Kippax player and got talking about other local musicians and the fact that Steve hadn't played for a number of years also, decided to form a music group themselves and thats when Simply Brass was formed in 2000. Initially as a quartet, 2 Cornets, Euphonium and Trombone they rehearsed in a Builders Workshop.
Also In 2000 Tony was approached by Mr John Woodward another ex. Kippax player who was the Bandmaster of Kirkbymoorside Town band who invited him to play Bass Trombone. Tony stayed with Kirkbymoorside for 4 years playing both tenor and bass trombone as well as playing with Simply Brass but found the 50 mile round trip two or more times a week to Kirbymoorside a bit much and decided to play for Simply Brass only.
Tony often guested with Scarborough Concert Band when they were short of players and in 2006 became a regular player on bass trombone and continues to do so at present.
