 Who are Simply Brass

Simply Brass are a group of like minded brass and percussion musicians whose aim is to have fun and play music to the best of their abilities. The group, which was founded 7 years ago, was originally a quartet who practiced in a builder’s yard and has now grown to an ensemble of 15 players who rehearse at Queen Street Central Hall in Scarborough every week.

Steve Hague is the group’s Musical Director and arranges all the music specifically for Simply Brass – he’s also a mean cornet player!

Simply Brass have an extensive repertoire of music ranging from Classical and standard Brass Band favourites, to music from films including James Bond and Lord of the Rings, to popular music and finally a bit of swing thrown in to round off a varied and exciting programme.

The players all live in Scarborough and it’s surrounding area, although many have moved to the area over the years from various parts of the country for work and family reasons. They have varied musical backgrounds – a number have played in top Brass Bands throughout the country, a couple have music degrees and others have played for years for the sheer enjoyment of it. The group range in age from early 20’s to 70 something and includes a funeral director, teacher, lawyer, policeman, builder, mothers and a few retired ones!

Simply Brass enjoy entertaining the public and have appeared at various village shows, fund-raising events for St Catherine’s Hospice, Weddings, Sunday afternoon concerts at Peasholm Park and Filey Bandstand and carol services around the region.

We rehearse every Monday evening at Queen Street Methodist Church, Queen Street, Scarborough from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.

New players and guests are most welcome. Why not come along and have a practice with us and meet some really nice and friendly people. Also enjoy one of Jack's cup's of tea at the break, we may even give you a biscuit.
