Stephen Hague - Conductor/Musical Director
Stephen started to play the Cornet at the age of 12 with Kippax Band, the Local Village Band.
He was taught by Mr Norman Morley the then conductor of the band who played Euphonium in the famous St Hilda’s Colliery Band in his earlier years.
Stephen progressed quickly to the Solo Cornet ranks and held the 2nd Man Down and Principal Cornet Positions for several years.
After approximately 10 Years with Kippax, Steve moved to the Allerton Bywater Colliery Band and helped with the formation of that band.
It was in the early 80’s that Steve was persuaded to play with the TA Band, “The Yorkshire Volunteer's” then based in Pontefract and was Principal Cornet of that Band for around 12 Years.
Steve gained valuable experience in that band and helped out Regular Army Bands on numerous occasions. He always remembers having to sight-read full concert programmes as it was expected of you and uses the experience he gained in his current roles today.
It was during this period Steve moved to Scarborough for work reasons and still continued playing for the Yorkshire Volunteer's Band travelling 80 miles each way to rehearsals and jobs. Steve also had a spell playing for and Conducting Ripon City Band.
Steve decided to stop playing and had a break of approximately 7 years and spent this time with his family.
Whilst walking thorough Scarborough one day Steve bumped into an old friend, Tony Spencer who played Trombone in Kippax with him and who had retired to Scarborough to live. Tony was playing in a small Brass Ensemble in Bridlington with Fred Muscroft.
Tony suggested starting a Brass Ensemble in Scarborough and found a few more players and Steve blew the cobwebs of his Cornet and Simply Brass was formed.
Simply Brass has now progressed from 4 Players to 15 or so and Steve now conducts the band.
Steve is not only a cornet player and conductor but an Arranger of Music. He has arranged numerous pieces for Simply Brass and also has had several pieces published for full Brass Bands through Pennine Music Publishers and Sibelius Music. He recently arranged three pieces for Carlton Main Colliery Band's principal Cornetist Kirsty Abbott's for her new CD Soliloquy.
Steve has helped out on several occasions the following Bands:- Kirkbymoorside, Old Silkstone and the Shepherd Group Band.
Steve has recently been playing with East Yorkshire Motor Services Band along with fellow Simply Brass Members Kevin and Jayne Moxon.
